Boston Pride is proud to offer a diverse set of workshops during NERP08:
W01. Beyond Robert's Rules: How To Run An Effective Meeting [more]
Do your meetings start late and run long? Do you feel like nothing gets done when you're in meetings? Learn how to better delegate projects or tasks to your volunteers while also improving your leadership skills during this workshop chocked with tips on how to run an effective meeting. Improve your skills to chair a meeting, deal with difficult situations constructively, manage conflict effectively and devise a working agenda.
Presented by Robert Pulster, of the Egleston Square, MA-based non-profit ESAC and co-chair of the Massachusetts Democratic Party's Ward 19.
W02. Self, Community, Pride [more]
Pride is not just a day or a week of the year when we show the world who we are, it is 365 days a year. How can we bring Pride into our lives and into the rest of the year? How do we use our Pride and diversity to show who we really are, instead of the snap shot that the rest of the world sees once a year? This workshop will facilitate a discussion on local and national initiatives that have these issues at its core; whether is by volunteering at a hospice or with an AIDS service organization, adding a platform or working on international human rights issues or getting involved in other political movements. Pride means something different to everyone, what does it mean to you?
Facilitated by Jayme Martin of the Boston Pride Committee and Billy Ulrich, Region 6 Regional Director.
W03. Show Us the Money: Fundraising Beyond Sponsors & Parties [more]
Development and fundraising activities undertaken by Pride Committees are usually limited to securing money from corporate sponsors and revenue generated by a bevy of events. This workshop will open your eyes to a wide world of other development activities yet to be explored. This hands-on participatory workshop will explore the many, often underutilized, ways that Pride Committees can increase the revenue they raise money for their organizations.
Facilitated by Development Officers from local organizations and national foundations.
W04. Take Pride in Your Health [more]
This panel discussion includes public health professionals discussing topics like HIV/AIDS, Substance Abuse, Domestic Violence, Breast Cancer, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and other GLBT health related issues. They will offer insights on these subjects and how these topics can (and should) be incorporated into Pride week celebrations. It is time to educate ourselves and take Pride in our health. Stress reduction opportunities and techniques will be shared during this panel discussion.
Facilitated by GLBT Health Liaison to the City of Boston in the Boston Public Health Commission and representatives from the AIDS Action Committee of Mass, MALE Center, The Network/La Red and Casa Esperanza.
W05. Alphabet Soup: It’s What’s Good For You! [more]
How can we be a movement of inclusiveness and embrace our diversity if we exclude some members of our community? Working with everyone in the GLBT (QIA etc…) equation in harmonic unison toward a common goal should be at the heart of what we do. But how can we get it done and done right? This session will be a round table discussion about achieving genuine and complete inclusiveness in our Pride celebrations and our lives.
Panelists will include Holly Ryan, Chair of the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition; Lisa M. Pic-Harrison, from the Board of Directors of Somos Latin@s; Kelly M. Lydon, Administrative Assistant & Youth Pride Coordinator; Karen Fried Salfity, Director of Special Projects and Liaison to the GLBT Communities Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services.
W06. Media: Getting it, Keeping it, Working it [more]
The media, whether mainstream or LGBT, corporate or grassroots, is a key vehicle for distributing messages and increasing influence in the community. In this seminar, you’ll learn about traditional and 21st-century professional communication strategies to help your Pride’s message be relevant and accessible.
Facilitated by Paul Karr, the Director of Media Field Strategy for GLAAD
W07. The MIT Geeks Guide to an Effective and Efficient Website [more]
