In 2016, Boston Pride inaugurated its Pride Arts program, a series of events that focus on queer-related art and culture. In particular, Pride Arts ventures to showcase LGBTQ artists, authors, and creators in the greater Boston area, and to connect our larger community with arts and culture, in all of its forms and expressions.

Here is the 2018 Pride Arts program, as of 05/01/2018.

On Our Own Terms: Underrepresented Voices in Poetry
Hawthorne Hotel Library Room (18 Washington Square W, Salem, MA)Poetic language can empower and lend authority to voices that are otherwise often marginalized. The LGBTQ community, encompassing the wide spectrum of gender and sexual “other,” is one representation of this, and our experiences with class, ethnicity, employment, and socio-politics often combine in creating our sense of “otherness.” For those of us whose experience of life is different from the mainstream, all of those things are inextricably tied.

Four LGBTQ poets (Dominique Cyprès, Pilar Quintana, James St. Vincent, Nate Vaccaro) will read from our work and discuss how we use poetic forms to define, realize and express our unique life experiences, creating a voice not only for ourselves as individuals, but for our community.

Theatre Show: Wig Out!
OBERON – American Repertory Theater (2 Arrow St, Cambridge, MA)
> Get your ticket nowTarell Alvin McCraney, the Oscar-winning writer of Moonlight, gives us life with Wig Out! a divine exploration of drag ball culture, chosen family, and the desire to be desired.

When the House of Light is challenged to a surprise ball by the rival House of Di’abolique, they’ve got to leave it all on the floor to defend their family’s Legendary status.

“Tarell is unapologetically writing about black and brown people who are queer,” says Director Summer L. Williams. “We want to be clear, there’s a real distinction between the pop-culture version of drag and the ball scene this play welcomes us into. This is not about the hype, but about the heart—this is about people making a home and being free to be who they are.”

We hope that you are able to join us for this bold, brutally honest battle of the ages.
